The storm came up fast, the way they do on the Sea of Galilee. These were fishermen. They had ridden out squalls their whole lives, and this one had them bailing and losing. Jesus slept in the stern on a cushion until they woke Him with the question all of us have asked in some form: don't you care that we're going down?

He stood up in the wind and said three words. Peace, be still. Mark records what happened next as a great calm. Not smaller waves. A great calm. (Mark 4:35-41)

I collaborated on this piece with my friend, a South African painter named Pieter Van Tonder. His brush, my direction. We wanted to hold the second when chaos yields to peace, when the water has already heard His voice. The stillness that follows surrender.
