That gap is what this piece is about. Most of my own prayers have been answered in forms I almost missed. The phone call I almost did not pick up. The neighbor who showed up at the wrong time and turned out to be on time. The verse I had read a hundred times that finally landed. Faith, for me, is less about waiting for God to arrive and more about paying close enough attention to call the thing on the water by its right name. The squint is the work. Could this be the Christ.

It's a photograph. Vertical. I shot Him into the sun so He's a silhouette on dark water. You can't see His face. That was on purpose. This is the kind of  Christian art I want to make. You have to do the work the disciples had to do.

Look closely. Squint if you need to. Decide who that is on the water in your life right now.
